Q & A in the Shower

Liam was asleep. Perfect time to jump in the shower. So, I asked Noah, "Do you want to play upstairs or downstairs while Mommy is in the shower?" (he has buckets of toys and two sets of trains in both places). His response, "Upstairs". OK, and I hop into the shower.

The following sequence of Questions and Answers occurred while I took my 7 minute shower:

Q: "Mommy! I want to play with my lantern, can you get it for me?"

A: "No, I'm in the shower, you're going to have to wait"

"I don't want to wait!" - he stomps out.

Q: "mommy ... mommy ... MOMMY!"

A: "WHAT?"

Q: "I want to play on the computer."

A: "You can't play on the computer until you earn it by going potty on the toilet like a big boy"

"No! I don't want to go potty"

Q: "Mommy, how 'bout I play just a little bit on the computer while you're in the shower!"

A: "No"

"YES! But I want to play on the computer"

"Noah, I'm in the shower and you have to earn the computer time, sorry, no computer"

(he whines and squeals as he wanders out of the bathroom)

Q: "mmmfmggmhh! ... gggrddythj ... MOMMY! ... I HGDJGDUSG ... KLDSUGDT .... HELP ME .... MOMMY .. Mooooooommmmmmmeeeeee"

A: "Noah, I can't understand you when you're in the other room."

Q: "Mommy! Can you get my lantern now?!"

A: "First of all, you're screaming and you're going to wake up Baby Liam, so stop screaming. Second, no. You cannot play with the lantern because you started disassembling it"

"But I won't break it!"

"No. Noah, I need you to leave me alone while I'm in the shower and find something to play with in your baskets in the front room"

Q: "But I want you to say please!"

A: "Please Noah"

"NO! I don't want to leave you alone"

"Noah, leave the bathroom now please!"

Q: "But mommy? ... Mommy?!!!"

A: "What?"

"I'm hungry and thristy, you need to get me a snack and some juice now".

"Noah, leave ... the ... bathroom ... now".

And with that, he placed himself directly outside of the open bathroom door and started humming the same monotone for the rest of my shower. As soon as the water turned off, he bolted into the bathroom and started barating me with questions again. I cannot WAIT for Preschool to start.

7th Anniversary

Above is a picture from our wedding in 2002, 7 years ago. We celebrated our anniversary in August. Now, here we are with two little boys, a few Bachelor's degrees under our belts, 9 moves and 5 states later ... it's crazy to think about.

When we got married, I think Daniel knew me pretty well and I don't think I knew him very well at all. But the more I unearth about him, the more endearing he has become to me and the more I realize I need him more than I ever thought and he feels more perfect for me in almost every way. On the flip side, the more Daniel unearths about me, the more I think he wants to bury it all and hope for the best.

We're really different, but we both seem to find it amusing, entertaining and endlessly adorable about the other and I like that about us.

Here is a current picture of us:

For a fun little "Anniversary Exercise" I've decided to do a variation on the "20 Random Facts About Me" thing. I'm going to write 20 random facts about Daniel, then he'll write 20 about me ... here goes my list about Daniel:

1. Physical Feautures - he loves my lips and my legs the most, but he also appreciates tan toes. He thinks his best feature is his eyes, but I know that his best feature is his bum.

2. He hates talking on the phone ... for any reason, or for any length of time. I'm pretty sure if there were an emergency and I were unconcious, he would rather drive me to the ER than to call 911 and talk to them on the phone. I guess you'd call talking on the phone his pet peeve. His actual pet peeve is when people driving, stop traffic to break the law and cross a double yellow line.

3. His two favorite things I do for him are: laundry and my impersonation of the dancing mortgage girls (ya know the ones on your sidebar whenever you're on the internet?? .. yeah, I can do a dead on impersonation that'll knock your socks off ... at least it knocks Daniel's off).

4. When Daniel is laughing, I mean really laughing, he always covers his mouth. I don't know why, but it's cute.

5. He is most afraid of not being able to provide for or protect his family.

6. He loves to eat applesauce with graham crackers broken up in it. I think it's sick. Then again, he likes bananas too and I don't like them at all. But he likes bananas the best when they are just a little green still.

7. He loves the outdoors and outdoor stores. He has an REI membership and gets dividends each year - which he uses, he picks up free outdoor magazines and reads them (we have a YAKIMA one in our room right now) and when we got married we had the choice of getting a bedroom set of furniture or spending $500 at REI ... guess which one we chose?

8. He is a VERY active sleeper. He sleep walks, rolls and flips around a lot and says stuff ALL THE TIME in his sleep.

9. He is very picky and expects the best out of things he owns. He will wait and save up to buy the best type of an item, instead of buying something for convenience sake.

10. He thinks my dad is hilarious. He thinks I am hilarious too.

11. Daniel loves to ride bikes. He recently spent a few months researching old school BMX bikes on ebay until he found the version he wanted and bought it for himself for Father's Day.

12. He blows off steam by riding his BMX bike, snowboarding, wailing on his electric guitar or by talking to me.

13. He is perfectly content to listen to me talk ... sometimes for hours.

14. The girl he feels most comfortable around (besides me) is my little sister, Christina.

15. He hates Thai food, but loves Chinese food - particularly the sweet Chinese entrees (mu shu pork and pork buns).

16. His dream job would be to own his own graphic design firm.

17. He never wears red because someone told him when he was 14 that it didn't look good on him.

18. If he had more time and money, he would love to do major home improvement projects all by himself.

19. He has to hem every piece of business clothing he gets .. in the length of the legs and the length of the arms and he hates that.

20. He is not competative - at all. (as a side note: Daniel read through all of these and said the only one that was false was this last one ... I think he's wrong).

Here's Daniel's list about me:

1. She is scared to death of spiders (or almost any other bug).

2. She loves date nights

3. She's the mover and shaker, always eager to get out of the house. I'm the homebody who would rather stay home and relax.

4. She has expensive taste, but so do I, really.

5. She could make a living as a stand-up comedian, although she doesn't think so.

6. Her dream job would be as a singer for the Metropolitan Opera Company.

7. She loves the beach.

8. Her favorite movie is "Strictly Ballroom", although we don't own it.

9. She is an amazing seamstress and sells handmade bags online (plug for Teresamia )

10. She loves Halloween, although she hates anything remotely scary.

11. She's developed a love for shoes since we've been married.

12. She has an infinite number of nicknames for me and for the boys.

13. If she had infinite time and money, she would spend all her time giving away money to those less fortunate (after buying a house in Sausalito, CA, of course).

14. She loves to talk - on the phone, in person, via email, on the blog, whatever.

15. She talks to her sister Christina more than anyone.

16. People feel instantly comfortable around her and divulge all kinds of personal information within minutes of meeting her.

17. She loves her name - Francesca. And she loves that her dad has always called her that (never "Fran").

18. She still thinks that she's a hardcore camper / outdoorsman, but she's actually gotten soft - although she won't admit it.

19. She works her tail off for her boys (including me).

20. She's very competitive, and loves to talk trash (in a nice way), although she doesn't usually win.

This is MY blog, soooooooo, uh number 20 from Daniel about me .. is totally not true. I usually win :)

California Dreamin' ....

Last night I had a dream about California. I was just walking around the block in my old neighborhood in Concord but I woke up so refreshed.

The air was fragrant, it was cooling down from a hot summer day and the sun was just starting to set. The familiar brown hills dotted with green oak trees were on the horizon. The new housing track in front of our house was gone and it was an open field, like it used to be when I was 14. I knew my family was at home, all my sisters, sitting around the table and wandering around the kitchen, talking and laughing.

I miss all that.

Day One - Saugatuck, MI

Oval Beach, Saugatuck, MI:

check out those burn lines ... yeah, that hurt the next day.

Day Two - South Haven, MI

I altered this picture to make a point ... this beach was shallow! I was maybe 100 yards out and not even up to my shoulders yet - crazy!!! I totally want to take the boys back to this little beach, perfect for them!

Behind me is Lake Michigan and the inlet to the marina in South Haven.

Day Three - Holland, MI The weather was pretty crappy, raining on and off all day long, but it didn't stop us from venturing out a bit.

Daniel and I just got back from a 3 day, 2 night trip by OURSELVES to western Michigan. Daniel's mom and little brother, Ian, drove from Pennsylvania to watch the boys for us, they are amazing!! I enjoyed being without the boys so much, it makes me wonder if I am a horrible mother. One time, Liz (Daniel's mom) told me she always felt a little like a "hack musician" because when she didn't practice or play for a few weeks, she didn't miss it. Am I a "hack mother" because I was gone for 3 days and didn't miss being a mommy??

A few things that were especially enjoyable:

1. Waking up to silence, calmly and quietly, rolling over and seeing my husband still in bed. No screaming, no crying and whining for breakfast or to get out of their crib. No wet or poopy diapers to change. No banging or crashing. No work for Daniel to run off to ... it was bliss ... every morning.

2. Eating out. I did not wash one dish or make one meal. We would waltz into a restaurant, order food, people would bring it to us, smiling, and then we'd eat and leave the mess. The people at the restaurant would smile and wave to us as we left ... restaurants are amazing inventions. Genius.

3. Falling asleep in the middle of the afternoon on the beach. I usually can NEVER relax while the boys are concious. Even if Liam is asleep and Noah is watching a movie, I just know that if I close my eyes, I will open them to a startling sight or a loud terrible crash - and consequently have an immediate headache. I laid on the warm sand, next to my sweet and incredibly attractive husband and listened to waves lap a few yards away from my feet and lull me to sleep.

4. No schedules. Our motto was "it's like, whatever" (Topher Grace quote from "Win A Date With Tad Hamilton"). We woke up whenever, we ate breakfast wherever, whenever. We went to the beach, or walked around downtown. We walked into shops, we walked out of shops. We got treats. We bought trinkets and lingered at gallery windows looking at paintings. We ate lunch late and then watched a movie. No nap schedules. No hungry kids. No whining. No needs to be met, just Daniel and me ... total relaxation and happiness.

5. No cleaning. We left our hotel room with wet towels on the floor, clothes strewn all over the tables and chairs, and desperately in need of more shampoo and conditioner (I have a lot of hair and those tiny sample sized shamposs and conditioners didn't hack it for more than one shower). We came back and our clothes were folded neatly, the towels were replaced with new ones and shampoo and conditioner was fully stocked. At the end of our stay, we left the bed unmade, the towels on the floor again and the hair dryer plugged in and out on the countertop. We left wrappers on the floor and papers we didn't need on the desk hapahzardly. It was awesome.

Now I'm home. I miss Daniel and I loved visiting with Liz and Ian last night. But it's just me and the boys and Noah is happily watching Dumbo and Liam is taking is famously long morning nap. Not bad ... but vacations are so nice :)

Noah Quote

While Daniel and I were gone for a few days, "Gammie" (Daniel's mom) and "Incle Ian" (Daniel's little brother) came to watch Noah and Liam for us.

On the way to IKEA one day, Uncle Ian said the word "stupid" twice! Noah had to, ofcourse, remind him that stupid is a bad word and we don't say that word. On the way home from IKEA Uncle Ian slipped "stupid" one more time and this was Noah's response:

... pause .... heavy sigh ... "Gammie and Uncle Ian. If you only say good words, then I won't have to say that they're bad".

Props to Noah for keeping things in line while mommy and daddy were gone :)

This past weekend, we took a family vacation. The first day, Daniel and I went to Cedar Point sans the boys (amazing) and the second day we all went to the Toledo Zoo. The high points of the Toledo Zoo were the polar bears and seals and then the "river" they had in the new kids' area ... check it out:

The "river" in the kids' area

The boys were pooped and totally conked out on the ride home ... sign of a good day :)
